WAG Performance Camps and Workshops

Anna Robertsone-News, Education, Women's artistic gymnastics

The end of January saw the first Women’s Artistic Gymnastics (WAG) Junior and Senior Performance Camps held in Christchurch. The programme is created for both athletes and coaches – building the capability of coaches to deliver better gymnastics, to then create better athletes across all levels. Invited athletes attended with their coaches and were trained under the direction of WAG Performance Director Mary Wright, WAG Head Coach Terry Walker and Sport Development Committee Coach Liaison Michele Hawke.

Coach development opportunities were offered in the form of daily workshops. which were opened to other coaches (without athletes on camp) as a continuous learning opportunity. Workshops on offer included; Physical abilities testing (PAT), injury prevention, periodisation, ballet barre exercises, floor and beam complex, uneven bar skills, tumbling skills and vaulting skills.

The next Junior Performance Camp will be held during the April school holidays, in Auckland. Like the January camp, workshops and training sessions will be open for other coaches to attend as well. For more information, please see the education calendar.
