Team Havana Opens Olympic Cycle with Strong International Results

New Zealand’s top rhythmic gymnast Havana Hopman (Counties Manukau Gymnastics), accompanied by coaches Elena Pirozhenko and Tracey Redhead (tour judge), has kicked off the new Olympic cycle with all-new routines, a poised presence, and performances that turned heads.

Four Finals in France
The first stop proved a strong start, at the Thiais Grand Prix in Paris, where Havana qualified for all four apparatus finals—a rare and commendable achievement—with final placings of 7th in hoop, 4th in ball, 7th in clubs, and 5th in ribbon.

“My highlight was definitely the atmosphere,” said Havana. “The support from the crowd was amazing. It felt so special knowing people were enjoying our routines—it just gave everything a lift.”

“Standing beside the floor and watching Havana perform so confidently—it was emotional. The crowd was clapping along, and the judges were clearly engaged. To finish fourth in ball and make all four finals was an incredible way to start the season,” coach Elena agreed.

Holding Her Own in Bulgaria
The following weekend in Bulgaria, Havana competed against a stacked field of over 80 gymnasts, including several Olympians, in the first major world cup of the cycle. She placed 19th in the all-around, with apparatus rankings of 22nd in hoop, 36th in ball, 11th in clubs, and 14th in ribbon.

“I was just so excited for the international season to begin again,” Havana said. “We’ve been working hard for six months on four completely new routines, and I couldn’t wait to get out there and show the world and get feedback on them.”

“We had a lot of positive feedback from coaches and judges, especially about her artistry”, shared Tracey who judged on all parts of the judging panel across the events. “It is Havana’s strong artistry—especially her dance steps—that helps her stand out. She’s also consistent with execution and has good value elements with apparatus.”

“It’s hard to pick a highlight, but her clubs routine in Sofia was exceptional. Confident, clean, and powerful—finishing 11th in such a strong field is a great achievement.” Tracey added.

Looking Ahead
Reflecting on the tour, Havana says she’s proud—but hungry for more.

“We’re on the right track. I’ve learned a lot, and there’s definitely more to improve. But I’m proud of my team and what we achieved.”

Both Elena and Tracey agree this tour is just the beginning.

“We’ve built a strong foundation. This tour showed us that belief, preparation, and trust in the process really matter. We’ve got a great team—and we’re only going to get stronger.” Elena added.

With the first international events under her belt, Havana returns home grateful for all the support.

“To my coaches Elena and Tracey, my family, my physio Renee, my club Counties Manukau, and the entire Gymnastics NZ community—thank you for believing in me. I’m so grateful.”

A Message to Young Gymnasts
Havana also had a message for others chasing big goals.

“Never give up! It sounds simple, but it’s everything. Find your own style, let your personality shine, and surround yourself with people who lift you up.”

We’re super proud of Team Havana. The future’s looking bright and we can’t wait to see what’s next.
