Springboard in Action at Gymnastics Nelson

Springboard in Action is a series highlighting how clubs across New Zealand are making Springboard their own. By sharing experiences from clubs at different stages of implementation, we’re showcasing the flexibility of the programme and the many ways it can be successfully delivered.

This month, we’re featuring Gymnastics Nelson, who have embedded Springboard throughout their recreational programme by adapting it to suit the way their classes and pathways are already structured.

Rather than delivering one Springboard level at a time, Gymnastics Nelson runs multiple levels within the same session. Coaches work across the different progressions, ensuring each gymnast is challenged at the level that’s right for them while allowing classes to continue operating in a way that suits the club. The club is also developing its own grading system to support gymnasts as they progress through the programme and achieve their certificates.

Gymnastics Nelson has also built the programme into its recreational pathway by using Springboard level 1 as a stepping stone between its parent-assisted programme and recreational gymnastics. Dedicated independent classes for four-year-olds are helping children transition confidently into solo classes before continuing through the Springboard pathway as they progress through the club’s recreational programme.

The club has also aligned its wider programme with Springboard. Last term’s Gym for All Challenge was based on Springboard skills, giving gymnasts the opportunity to bring together everything they’ve been learning in a fun and supportive environment.

Gymnastics Nelson’s experience demonstrates how Springboard can be embedded into an existing recreational programme. By adapting class delivery, building the programme into its pathways, and aligning club activities with the Springboard framework, the club has created an approach that works for its gymnasts, coaches, and community.
