Zahara has always expected a lot of herself.
From starting recreational gymnastics in Levin to now training and competing with Manawatu Gymsports at senior international level, she credits gymnastics with developing a work ethic that extends well beyond the gym.

“I love how I naturally put my everything into all the things I do,” she says.
But one of the biggest lessons in Zahara’s journey has been learning that giving everything doesn’t mean everything has to be perfect.
Now in her first year as a senior international gymnast, she is heading to the 2026 XP Gymnastics Nationals with a different measure of success in mind.
“I’m tough on myself and always expect perfection, to the point where I often don’t acknowledge my achievements unless they’re 100% perfect.
“A big goal of mine is learning to accept and celebrate the small wins, even if they aren’t as big as I want.”

One of those wins has been tumbling. It’s an area Zahara has struggled with physically and mentally, and one that has challenged her confidence.
“Pushing through that this year and competing the tumbles I’m supposed to has made me realise that even when I’m scared, if I trust myself and my training, I’m actually extremely capable.”
That progress has helped take Zahara to some significant milestones this year. She has stepped up to senior international level and recently represented New Zealand at the Pharaohs Cup in Egypt, returning home with silver on uneven bars and bronze on vault.

Behind that journey has been her coach Ann Marie, who Zahara describes as “a rock”.
“She’s taught me so much of what I know in terms of skills, and also mentally, making sure I’ve had a voice that’s heard all throughout my gymnastics.”
As Zahara turns her attention to Nationals, of course she wants to perform well. But this time, the result won’t be the only measure of a successful competition.
“I just want to be proud of myself no matter what.”
It’s a lesson she hopes younger gymnasts can take from her journey too.
“Accept the small wins and be kind to yourself. Remember that you’re more than just a gymnast; you’re a person before you’re an athlete.”
The 2026 XP Gymnastics Nationals kick off tomorrow and run through to Saturday 3 October, at Mercury Baypark, Tauranga.
