It was confirmed last night that Glasgow will host the 2026 Commonwealth Games and that artistic gymnastics will be included in the reduced lineup of just 10 sports.
Traditionally, there has been a list of 20 compulsory sports in the Games programme, but Glasgow 2026 will be the first step in the Commonwealth Games Federation’s reset of the Games, intending to provide hosts flexibility with the number of core sports, and encouraging new sports, to allow a more sustainable long-term agenda.
“This is great news for both our gymnastics community and the New Zealand public – gymnastics is one of the most watched sports at the Commonwealth Games.” said chief executive Andrea Nelson.
“The Commonwealth Games are an important event for New Zealand gymnasts to compete on the global stage. We look forward to hearing what opportunities there will be for our gymnasts to compete at this landmark event, ” she continues.
Our disappointment remains in regards to rhythmic not being included. Commonwealth Games Australia announced back in 2022 that only artistic would be at Victoria 2026 and though we hoped that may change for Glasgow, it has not.
The Glasgow 2026 Games will run from 23 July to 2 August.
