Gymnastics Nelson Showcases 54 Years of History

We’re proud to celebrate the efforts of our member club, Gymnastics Nelson, which recently hosted Gymnastics Unfolded: The Transformation of a Sport Through Time as part of Tuku 25 Whakatū—a Nelson City Council initiative to tuku (share) stories of people and place, showcasing the region’s heritage.

Held on 29 March at their club facility, the event highlighted over 54 years of gymnastics in the region. Visitors explored a curated slideshow of archival photos and stories—presented on the club’s new mezzanine—reflecting the growth and evolution of the sport locally. A 1950s-style gymnastics class was brought to life through a fun, hands-on experience, showing how far the sport has come.

The day also served as a community open day, welcoming local families and sparking intergenerational connections among past and present gymnasts. It was made possible through support from Nelson City Council, which has built a strong relationship with the club through its community programmes over the past 18 months.

Congratulations to Gymnastics Nelson for creating an inspiring and engaging celebration of the sport’s legacy.
