Gisborne Gymnastics Turns Challenge Into Opportunity

Gymnasts celebrate successful event at Gisborne Gymnastics Club

When the team at Gisborne Gymnastics Club began planning their annual competition, the numbers didn’t stack up. With rising costs—ribbons, medals, printing, staffing, and travel for judges—the forecast pointed to a financial loss. For a regional club, that’s no small risk.

But cancelling wasn’t an option.

“We knew what that would mean for our gymnasts,” said Centre Manager Emma Lister. “Without a local event, they’d have to travel further and spend more just to get their two qualifying scores. That extra cost would fall on families already doing their best to support their kids in the sport.”

So the club got creative and proactive.

They reached out to Whiti Ora Tairāwhiti (Sport Gisborne) who suggested applying for Tu Manawa funding, which helped offset some of the event costs. But the gap was still significant.

Realising many local businesses couldn’t commit to large sponsorships, the club flipped the model—instead of looking for one major sponsor, they sent 25 letters asking for smaller $200 contributions, encouraging gymnasts to personally approach a business, neighbour, or family member. The response? Seven generous donations that helped tip the scales.

That support allowed Gisborne Gymnastics to host their competition free of charge for their local gymnasts, and even generate a small profit from visiting clubs’ entry fees.

They didn’t stop there.

A café fundraiser, stocked with donated goods from Pak’nSave, Countdown, Walter Findlay, Gear Meat Pies, Puawai (florist), Mini Tankers (fuel cards), and Hirepool (heaters), kept costs low. The club also continued its tradition of offering free fruit and bottled water to everyone attending—creating a welcoming, thoughtful environment with apples, pears, feijoas, kiwifruit, and more on offer.

“This experience reminded us that when a community comes together, even big challenges can be overcome,” said Emma. “We’re so grateful to everyone who helped make this event happen.”
