From 9 – 16 January, 19 Men’s and Women’s Artistic coaches attended the FIG Level 2 Academy which we hosted in Auckland. A FIG Academy is a week-long coaching course which includes comprehensive theory and practical lectures across all apparatus. The week also finished with theory and practical exams. For coaches in New Zealand, the course also served as the senior coach course.
The course was presented by FIG experts. Keith Russell (Canada) was the Academy leader and presented all theory lectures (anatomy, physiology, biomechanics and psychology). Peggy Liddick (USA) presented WAG and Sergei Chinker (Belarus) presented the MAG practical lectures.
The highest scoring participants were Jacey Humpherys for WAG and Misha Koudinov for MAG. Both coaches are from Tri Star. We are pleased to advise that all coaches passed the exam requirements which was set for the Senior Coach qualification. To finalise the qualification participants just need to complete a post course assignment.
Gymnastics New Zealand would also like to acknowledge the Olympic Solidarity funding granted through the Technical Course programme. The funds helped with the costs of holding the event, and enabled our international experts to travel to New Zealand to lead the course.
A special thank you goes out to the clubs who were able to arrange demonstrators for the course, in particular, Counties Manukau Gymnastics, Tri Star and North Harbour Gymnastics.
