When Hannah Close, a 19-year-old retired Women’s Artistic Athlete from Dunedin Gymnastics Academy (DGA) realised she wasn’t sure what she wanted to study she decided to look for an overseas experience linked to the sport she loved. Hannah remembered a camp her fellow teammates had visited while on a training camp – International Gymnastics Camp (IGC).
Hannah was attracted to the camp because of the program they offered and the opportunity to be an active camp counselor. Hannah has been interested in coaching for a while “I thought the great environment at IGC would be the perfect place to build on my interests and abilities. I was also attracted to the giant foam pits too of course!”
Hannah is away for 3 months from the 1 June – 26 August 2017 with the opportunity to return annually for up to 3 years. Although an amazing opportunity; the camp isn’t a free ride and she is currently working at a rest home to help fund her visa, flights and travel insurance. Once you arrive you stay and eat for free.
Hannah is most looking forward to being in a different environment, meeting new people and working with different kids regularly and seeing their progress.
With a long term goal of living in Dunedin, Hannah plans to remain heavily involved in gymnastics as a Coach and Judge. We wish Hannah lots of luck and fun on her adventure, and we look forward to seeing her back in the gymnastics community with her many new skills.
