Team Gym Coming to the Waikato

Anna Robertsone-News, Midlands

After the Gym For All Symposium held in Auckland in October last year, many Clubs were very excited at the opportunities that running TeamGym could provide to their Clubs.

At the beginning of 2017, Waikato Clubs identified growth as a key priority in the Waikato Regional Action Plan (RAP). RAP’s are plans put together in each region to identify key priority areas that Clubs want to work on with support from Gymnastics NZ via their Regional Relationship Manager.

Discussion with Clubs highlighted that introducing TeamGym could be a great way to address this priority by stimulating growth within Clubs in the region. In order to get the programme up and running an application was submitted to Sport Waikato for KiwiSport funding and last month we were notified that Sport Waikato had granted just over $7,000 for TeamGym introduction in the Waikato.

The introduction of TeamGym in the Waikato will coincide with a roll-out nationally including a TeamGym programme, competition pathway, and coaching qualification. In the Waikato 10 Clubs are currently on board and preparing to start delivering in Term 4 2017 and Term 1 2018. These Clubs will receive funding to cover the cost of coach education and to subsidise the initial delivery of the sessions.
