Covid-19 saw the cancellation of the Endorsed Qualifying Events season and the subsequent 2020 NZ Gymnastics Championships.
We have created the Gymnastics NZ Super Series as a way to re-engage with the competitive community and celebrate our athletes, whilst still providing them with a stage in which to showcase their hard-earned skills.
Modified routines can be competed, to encourage a safe return to activity, and Clubs who were due to run an endorsed event will have the opportunity to run one Super Series event.
The country will be split into zones for each code, for athletes to compete within.
A culmination of these events will be showcased through social media.

- Individual - Open, ADP and International
- Multis (paris,trios/groups) - Open, ADP and International
- AeroDance - Open and International
No age brackets will apply for the Super Series.
Each routine will be judged as per the category rules but for the purpose of the Super Series, the difficulty score will not be included. Therefore the following will apply:
- Artistry out of 10 + execution out of 10 = score out of 20, then divided by 2
Leader board
Leader boards will be updated with the top 10 athletes per division each week.
Competition zones
- North Island
- South Island
Athletes can compete in as many events as they like in either zone but to be eligible for the leader board, they must compete in at least two events.
An athlete's zone is determined by the location of the Club that they are affiliated to.
Competition format
- Apparatus challenges only - there is no all around competition
- No compulsory routines (as otherwise set out in the MAG National Programme Manual)
- Challenge 4 - any 4 skills, 2 element groups to be met, 'A' value dismount if a dismount is chosen. Open to Levels 4-5 athletes only.
- Challenge 6 - any 6 skills, 3 element groups to be met, 'A' value dismount if a dismount is chosen. Open to Levels 6-7 athletes.
- Challenge 8 - any 8 skills, 4 element groups to be met, 'A' value dismount if a dismount is chosen. Open to Levels 8-9 athletes.
- Open challenge - full FIG requirements. Open to anyone who can meet the requirements.
Athletes must compete the same challenge level on each apparatus they choose to compete.
In all challenges, the rules are as per full FIG requirements. All skills being presented must appear in the Code of Points and athletes cannot include any development or additional skills from the MAG National Manual for D score.
There is no doubling of difficulty.
Gymnasts may do as many skills in a routine as required with the hardest (top) 4, 6, 8 or 10 skills counting towards their D score. The Element Group Requirements (EGR’s) must be within the top 4, 6, 8, 10 counting skills to be credited with the 0.5 EGR bonus.
Leader board
The leader board will show the top 10 athletes from each challenge in each zone.
Athlete rankings will be converted to points. i.e. 2nd place = 2 points, 6th place = 6 points, etc. Athletes' top 2 rankings from two events will be counted towards the leader board.
Competition zones
There are no competition zones for WAG. Athletes may participate in as few or as many events as they like.
Principles
- The focus at all levels should be on competing the skills (STEPs 5 and 6) or Composition Requirements (STEPs 7 – 10) that the gymnasts can achieve,
without pushing or encouraging them to compete skills they have not yet
mastered. - Gymnasts do not have to compete all 4 apparatus as there is no All Around event. However, competition organisers may choose to provide AA awards.
- Coaches may place their gymnasts in the STEP they deem to be most appropriate for that gymnast – it may be a STEP lower or higher than where they would have competed in this year. The STEP in which a gymnast competes in the GNZ Super Series will not impact where they may compete in 2021.
- As the requirements have been lessened, there can be no comparison between these scores and those achieved under normal rules.
Competition format
Age - STEPs 5 - 7
Event hosts can choose from the current 2 age divisions, so called ‘Unders’ and ‘Overs’ or add age divisions below or above these divisions to suit the entries.
STEP 5
- Unders - up to 11 yrs
- Overs - turning 12 yrs
STEP 6
- Unders - up to 12 yrs
- Overs - turning 13 yrs
STEP 7
- Unders - up to 13 yrs
- Overs - turning 14 yrs
Judging
STEPs 5 - 6
Scored out of 10
- All Difficulty values (DVs) will be awarded if attempted, even if the Technical Requirement for the element is not achieved, but execution deductions will
apply. Examples:- Handstand or handstand backward roll not within 10° of vertical
- split jump <135°
- Any Difficulty value (DV) that is omitted will lose the 0.5 DV value but not 1.0 for omission
- Execution deductions as per the WAG Manual will apply.
- Each judge will divide their deductions by 2 and submit to the panel secretary/recorder. The average of the deductions will be subtracted from 10.0
to give the final score.
STEPs 7 - 10
Junior and senior international will compete on STEP 10 rules.
- Vault
- Handspring vaults - D score = 1.0 (handspring, handspring 1/1 twist, ½ on ½ off etc.)
- Salto vault - D score = 2.0 (same as having all composition requirements)
- Bars, beam and floor
- D score
- Composition requirements (CRs) as per the Manual – each worth 0.5 for a total of 2.0
- No DV component of the D score – no rules for minimum number of skills,
chronological order, root skills etc. apply - No bonuses will be awarded
- E score
- Execution deductions as per the WAG Manual will apply
- Each judge will divide their deductions by 2 and submit to the panel
secretary/recorder. The average of the deductions will be subtracted from 10.0 to give the E Score.
- D score
Final Score = D score + E score = Maximum score = 12.0
STEPs 5-10 Beam and Floor
- Composition and Choreography deductions will NOT apply
- Artistry deductions WILL apply
Achievement Boards
For each STEP, the TC has named an achievement score. From each Super Series event, a list of names will be published with those athletes who have achieved that score. These scores are:
STEPs 5 and 6
- 9.5 +
STEPs 7 – 10
- Vault: handspring vaults 10.5 +
- Vault: salto vaults 11.0 +
- Bars, beam and floor 11.0 +
